What is Yoga?

Yoga means ‘union’ and the general practise of yoga combines physical moves (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation/meditation techniques. Today you can type the word ‘yoga‘ into any search engine on the internet and you will have instant access to a wealth of information about what yoga is and also about the several types of yoga that are taught, each one of them bringing numerous benefits to our general well-being.

Yet no matter which type of yoga you choose to practise I am sure that teachers from all the different schools will agree on one point: yoga involves much, much more than physical exercise. It is in fact a philosophy that is thousands of years old and which, if practised regularly really does bring a heightened sense of self awareness as well as having a profound, positive effect on the way you deal with all that life brings you. It is a holistic discipline that aims to connect mind, body and breathe, thereby bringing balance to the various aspects of our individual personalities.

"Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind and the harmony of the soul, create the symphony of life"

∼ B.K.S Iyengar
